Tracey Adams

Tracey Adams lives and maintains a studio on the central coast of California. As a printmaker and painter (encaustic), she has developed her unique style by incorporating characteristics from each of the two media, then applying some of those characteristics to each. For example, she is currently working on a series which utilizes 30 foot rolls of Japanese paper dipped in molten wax. Some of these rolls are cut up into fragments and mounted on panels with encaustic, some are mounted on paper with her intaglio prints, and some have become large hanging installations.

Adams work can be seen in several publications including, Encaustic, a Guide to Creating Fine Art with Wax, Lissa Rankin. Her work is in many museum collections, Crocker Museum, Monterey Museum of Art, Tucson Museum of Art and Fresno Museum of Art to name a few. She has exhibited her work in over 100 exhibitions, including 3 solo museum exhibitions in the U.S. and at the Andy Warhol Museum in the Slovak Republic.

Art and music have always played huge roles in my life. I studied piano for many years, then earned my advanced degrees in composition and conducting, while simultaneously enrolling in drawing and painting classes. In 1992, I arrived at a critical moment when I had to decide whether to devote all my time to music or to art. Art won.

Working in series, developing subsequent pieces from those just created, like theme and variations, I exhaust the possibilities for exploration. Many times I will scrape down or paint over existing paintings or works on paper that are not successful, aware that I must create something much stronger and powerful. Influenced by nature and the rural coastal environment where I live, I am drawn to patterns, puzzles, geometry and the endless connections I’m able to make within that realm.
